Bicycle

A bike ride on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail offers beautiful scenery and historic interest. With over 70 miles of the Towpath Trail complete, as well as many more miles of connector trails, bicycling can be a wonderful adventure. Today you can walk or ride along the same path on the Towpath Trail that the mules used to tow the canal boats loaded with goods and passengers.

The scene would have been different then: the canal was full of water carrying a steady flow of boats amongst the constant conversations of "canawlers." You can still see remnants of that former scene as you pass many of the canal locks and related structures. From the vantage point of the Towpath Trail you can also enjoy the beauty of forests, fields, and wetlands flanking the path as it winds its way along the canal and the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. Evidence of beavers and other wildlife can be seen in many places along the trail. From an afternoon out, to a trip of the entire Canalway, your bicycle can transport you through miles of adventure.

A bicycle ride can also be combined with other adventures in the Ohio & Erie Canalway. Bicycling and canoeing trips are run out of the Lake Avenue Trailhead in Massillon. In Cuyahoga Valley National Park, you can take an one-way bicycle trip on the Towpath Trail combined with a return trip on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
